WOUND CARE
Proper wound care is essential for promoting healing and preventing infection in foot and ankle wounds. Wounds in the feet and ankles can be caused by a variety of factors, including cuts, scrapes, blisters, and puncture wounds.
To properly care for a foot or ankle wound, follow these steps:
Clean the wound: Gently clean the wound with soap and water, or a wound cleanser if available. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, as these can damage healthy tissue.
Stop any bleeding: If the wound is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage to help stop the bleeding.
Apply an antibiotic ointment: To help prevent infection, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to the wound.
Cover the wound: Cover the wound with a sterile bandage or dressing, making sure that it is not too tight.
Keep the wound clean and dry: Change the dressing daily, and keep the wound clean and dry. Avoid soaking the wound in water, such as in a bath or pool.
Watch for signs of infection: If the wound becomes red, swollen, or painful, or if there is drainage or a foul odor, these may be signs of infection. See a doctor or other healthcare provider for evaluation and treatment.
By following these steps, you can help to promote healing and prevent infection in foot and ankle wounds. If you have any questions or concerns about wound care, contact Irvine Foot & Ankle and make your appointment for a thorough evaluation and proper treatment by Dr. Michael Bastani.
