turf toe

Turf toe is a type of injury that affects the big toe joint. It is caused by excessive bending of the toe, which can stretch or tear the ligaments in the joint. This can happen when the foot is planted firmly on the ground and the toe is pushed upward, such as when pushing off to run or jump.

Turf toe gets its name because it is commonly seen in athletes who play on artificial turf, which is harder and less forgiving than natural grass. However, anyone can develop turf toe, regardless of the type of surface they are playing on.

Symptoms of turf toe may include pain, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty moving the big toe. In some cases, there may be a popping or snapping sensation when the toe is moved. The pain may be worse with weight-bearing activities, and may improve with rest.

If you have symptoms of turf toe, contact Irvine Foot & Ankle and make your appointment for a thorough evaluation and proper treatment by Dr. Michael Bastani.
