ankle instability & sprain

Ankle instability is a condition that occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn, causing the ankle to feel weak and unstable. This can lead to recurrent sprains, or the feeling that the ankle is going to give out.

Ankle sprains are the most common cause of ankle instability. These injuries occur when the foot is turned or twisted in an unnatural way, causing the ligaments to stretch or tear. This can happen during activities such as running, jumping, or landing from a jump.

Other causes of ankle instability include chronic ankle instability, which is a long-term condition that develops after multiple sprains, and congenital instability, which is a condition present at birth.

Symptoms of ankle instability may include pain, swelling, bruising, and a feeling of looseness or instability in the ankle. In some cases, there may be a popping or snapping sensation when the ankle is moved.
